When Lightroom Distraction Removal Is Too Aggressive

Lightroom’s Distraction Removal can be very good at finding unwanted people in a photograph. The finished removal, however, may be a different story.

On a recent image from Machu Picchu, Lightroom successfully identified people scattered throughout a complicated scene. The problem came when I asked it to remove them. In one area, the AI didn’t simply replace the people—it reconstructed a substantial part of the ruins, closing a walkway and inventing architectural details that didn’t belong.

The tool had found the right problem, but it tried to solve too much of it at once.

Finding Distractions Is Only Half the Job

The Distraction Removal tool examines a photograph and identifies elements that may not belong in the scene. For people removal, that might include tourists, passersby, or anyone else you don’t want in the finished photograph.

In the Machu Picchu image, there were people along the walkways, at the base of the steps, and throughout the center of the ruins. A few groundskeepers were visible on the left side as well. It was a busy scene, and removing the people would help place more attention on the architecture and surrounding mountains.

Lightroom did a good job finding nearly all of them. It also made a couple of incorrect selections, including part of a structure and an area near the base of a tree.

Those mistakes were easy to correct by deselecting the areas Lightroom had misidentified. The more important question was whether the remaining selections would produce believable removals.

Why Large Removals Can Go Wrong

A removal tool needs enough visual information around a selected area to determine what should replace it. A small selection may only require Lightroom to rebuild a little grass, stone, or pathway. A large selection containing several people can require it to interpret and reconstruct a much more complicated portion of the scene.

That’s where the result in my photograph broke down.

Lightroom made one large selection around a group of people in the center of the ruins. When I clicked Remove, the people disappeared—but so did part of the actual scene. A stepped wall changed shape, a walkway was cut off, and a new section of stone appeared where people should have been able to pass through.

Could the ruins have looked like that centuries ago? Perhaps. But that wasn’t what I photographed.

For me, the goal of the removal was to eliminate the people, not redesign Machu Picchu.

Keep the Removals That Work

A bad result in one area doesn’t mean you need to abandon the entire Distraction Removal pass.

Some of Lightroom’s selections produced perfectly reasonable results. The groundskeepers on the left disappeared cleanly. Another small group near the lower-right corner was also handled well. There was no reason to discard those successful removals simply because the center of the image had problems.

Instead, I kept the good results and removed the unsuccessful ones from the overall distraction-removal pass.

This is an important part of working with AI editing tools. The result doesn’t need to be an all-or-nothing decision. Treat each selected area independently. Accept the pieces that look believable and take a more deliberate approach with the rest.

Break Complicated Areas Into Smaller Pieces

For the problem area in the center, I switched to the regular AI-powered Remove tool and worked with smaller groups of people.

Rather than selecting everyone at once, I began with a group of three people on the left. That gave Lightroom a smaller area to rebuild and more surrounding context to work with. The result was much more convincing.

Next, I looked for natural separation between the remaining people. A small gap between two groups gave me a sensible place to divide the next removal. I used a smaller brush to keep the selection tight, removed the next group, and evaluated the available variations.

I continued through the scene in the same way: smaller selection, removal, inspection, and then the next group.

The process takes a little longer than pressing one button, but it gives the AI a more manageable problem each time. More importantly, it gives me greater control over how much of the photograph Lightroom is allowed to reconstruct.

Give the AI Less to Interpret

The key idea is not limited to removing people. It applies whenever an AI removal tool becomes too aggressive.

A large selection asks the software to make many decisions at once. It may need to rebuild textures, edges, shadows, structures, and pathways across one complicated area. The larger and more varied the selection, the more opportunities there are for the software to invent something that doesn’t make sense.

Smaller selections reduce that uncertainty. They let the tool concentrate on one subject or one visually related group at a time.

When a large removal produces an unrealistic result, try this approach:

  1. Keep any individual removals that already look good.

  2. Remove the unsuccessful selection from the distraction-removal pass.

  3. Divide the problem area into smaller subjects or groups.

  4. Keep each selection close to what you actually want removed.

  5. Inspect the result before moving to the next area.

You’re still benefiting from AI-assisted editing, but you’re guiding it with more specific decisions.

Preserve the Integrity of the Scene

After working through the Machu Picchu image in smaller sections, I was able to remove the people while preserving the architecture, pathways, and natural flow of the ruins. The finished photograph returned attention to the place itself—the stonework against the mountain backdrop—without introducing structural changes that distracted me for a different reason.

AI removal tools can save time, but they still need judgment. A clean-looking replacement isn’t necessarily an accurate or believable one. Look beyond whether the unwanted object has disappeared. Pay attention to what the tool created in its place.

Final Thoughts

When Lightroom’s Distraction Removal becomes too aggressive, don’t ask it to solve the same large problem again. Make the problem smaller.

Keep the removals that worked, discard the ones that didn’t, and handle the difficult areas in more targeted segments. The important thing is not how quickly the people disappear. It’s whether the finished photograph still makes visual sense.
