Using Harsh Light to Shape the View in an Alley Scene

City light is rarely perfect, and in this case it wasn’t trying to be. This alley in Denver had harsh, direct light with strong contrast and bright highlights pushing toward the end of the frame. Instead of working against it, I leaned into what was already there—the direction of the light and the natural leading line of the alley itself.

In Lightroom, the key adjustment was a simple radial mask placed along the alley to guide attention forward. From there, I increased clarity and texture to strengthen the localized contrast in the brickwork and ground surface. That combination doesn’t just add detail—it reinforces structure, helping the eye travel naturally down the frame toward the brighter light at the end of the alley.
