Live Edit: High Key Black & White

In my Live Edit videos, I process a photo I've never worked on before from start to finish. The bumps, missteps, and switchbacks are all part of the learning.
This edit is all about simplicity, softness, and letting the scene speak for itself. I start with a raw image of boats on calm water, shrouded in thick morning fog. There’s no script, no step-by-step checklist — just the process as it unfolds. The goal is a high key black and white treatment, pushing the tones bright while keeping enough shadow detail to hold shape and form. The fog is already doing half the storytelling for us; the rest comes from shaping the light.
You’ll see the decisions happen in real time — which tones to protect, which to let fade into white, and where to gently guide the viewer’s eye. I work with global adjustments first to establish the tonal range, then move into local tweaks that define the boats without breaking the airy mood. The process is fluid, and sometimes the image leads the way rather than the other way around. It’s about being responsive, not rigid.
By the end, the photo feels almost dreamlike. The boats are anchored in stillness, floating in a sea of light. High key editing works beautifully for scenes like this because it embraces minimalism and atmosphere.
