Bird Rock

Through photography I'm discovering and rediscovering San Diego. When I first moved here in the late 1990s, I was always visiting new corners of town, exploring my new surroundings. As the years go by and a city becomes familiar, I think we lose some of that adventurous spirit we first have when in a new place.

Now, looking at San Diego through the lens, I am seeing the once familiar in new ways. In the last 18 months, I've been places I haven't been in years. In some cases, places I've never visited before.

A couple of weeks ago I made my first visit to Bird Rock. You can tell from the photo where it gets its name. At high tide, only Bird Rock rises above the waves, the rest of the rocky shores hidden. I will definitely return to this spot, perhaps at low tide, when tide pools present a completely different foreground to this natural landmark.
