A great photograph is more than just the click of the shutter. It is a combination of many things. Vision, planning, field work, and post-processing all contribute to the final photograph. In Field To Frame, I share my process for envisioning, capturing, and creating a beautiful print using ON1 Photo RAW.
When I started this video course I had one goal – capture and create a photo worthy of being printed and hung on the wall. This video course documents the entire experience, from planning to capture through editing and printing.
Field To Frame will help you take your photography to the next level. Plan, execute, and realize your photographic vision.

Vision & Planning
How much planning should I do before a photo outing? What tools can I use for planning? What gear should I bring to capture my vision?
The first portion of Field To Frame is all about vision and planning. I share the concept for my photo outing and my vision for the types of images I want to capture. You’ll learn the tools I use to virtually scout a location and to check tides, weather, and wave activity.
I also detail the cameras, lenses, and other gear I’m bringing. The gear needs to support the vision. I explain how each piece of equipment I’m bringing support my goals for the shoot.
Field Work
What camera settings should I use? Does a composition need to be refined? Why? Do I need to move to a different location? When should filters get involved?
Go on location with me. As I work the scene, I explain why I’m setting up in certain places, how I’m composing a scene, and what my camera settings are. The ocean is dynamic and the light keeps changing. When it’s time to move and refine the composition, I explain why.
Culling & Editing
What photos are keepers and which ones should be rejected? What makes one composition stronger than another? Which photos lend themselves to the story I want to tell? How can post processing enhance that story?
During culling, I share thoughts on why I prefer one photo over another, and why some photos are rejected. You’ll learn how I leverage Photo RAW’s rating and tagging tools in the culling process.
In post-processing, many of Photo RAW’s tools and filters are used to enhance the story of each image. Presets, Effects filters, Local Adjustments, masking, blending options, and luminosity masks all play a role in crafting the final images.
Printing
What is the best way to print an image? Do I need color calibration and ICC profiles? What is soft proofing and how does it fit into the printing process?
I share workflows for both a basic print and a more advanced color managed printing process. You’ll learn how ICC profiles work, how to use them in ON1 Photo RAW, and why soft proofing is important in a color managed workflow.
