Show Notes
Learning composition did not come easy for me. It took a lot of studies, measured practice, and repeated effort to improve my skills. When I review my work, I pay extra attention to composition. There are a few compositional tips I think are less commonly used by landscape photographers:
Implied Leading Lines
Composing Open versus Closed Spaces
Blurring Focus To Compose
I discuss these techniques in today’s podcast. I also talk about a compositional markup of a photo from my library. My notes in brief:
The subject is the couple on the bench
The trees for a natural framing
Dappled light can be played up as a line toward the subject
The pathway entering the frame from the right is another leading line
Consider adding a sunburst behind the tree for ambiance. The scene needs more color, warmth, and contrast
A heavier, offset vignette can further emphasize the subject

To improve the composition of your pictures, incorporate other compositional approaches like the Golden Ratio or using Rule of Third. These are classic techniques that are time-tested to create stronger photographs with greater impact.
