3 Common Mistakes In ON1 Photo RAW

In this video, I share 3 mistakes I see photographers make using ON1 Photo RAW. These happen often enough that it was time for a video. When they first happen, you are left scratching your head and getting frustrated. I’ll explain each one and how to get yourself out of them.

The three mistakes:

  1. Changing the rating or badges for the wrong photo in Browse. You can change the rating, color label, and like/reject flags in Browse. When doing an advanced search, it can be very confusing when photos disappear unexpectedly. The key thing is the badges for a photo are above the thumbnail. Select an individual photo and you’ll see the badges inside the colored border are along the top.

  2. Misunderstanding tonal adjustments in Develop and Local Adjustments. Photographers either try to force the tones of their photos to fit their vision using only Develop, or they prematurely launch into Layers for exposure blending. Instead, use Develop for your global adjustments and Local Adjustments with masks to target specific tonal refinements.

  3. Accidentally masking away all the filters in Effects. Did you know there is a global mask for all filters in Effects? It is the masking area to the left of the Add Filter button. Applying a mask to the global mask affects all the filters in your filter stack. This commonly happens when trying to add a mask to the top filter in the stack - you accidentally click the global mask icon instead. Be careful with your clicks!
